Die HOCHSCHULE FLENSBURG und die DIN-NORMENSTELLE FÜR SCHIFFS- UND MEERESTECHNIK (NSMT) begleiten internationale Normungsentwürfe. Nachfolgend werden Zwischenstände u.a. in englischer Sprache gegeben.
- ISO/TC8/SC13 8.
1. Maritime Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES)
1.1 Preliminary remarks and boundary conditions
„The TC 8 secretariate has decided that the work shall be done in a group directly under TC 8, which means that we are not having a formal working group. This means that the use of the WG tools in ISO documents cannot be used directly and we will have to find some other tools making this work transparent and workable. In addition we cannot use ISO meeting tool as this will influence the ISO TC 8 plenary meeting numbering. So just now we use a mailing list and send out invitations/documents/minutes via outlook and mail.“
1.2 ISO/AWI 8933-1: Ships and marine technology — Energy efficiency — Part 1: Energy efficiency of individual maritime components
Approved new Work Item (AWI): This standard describes generic measuring and calculation methods to evaluate the energy efficiency of individual maritime components. A maritime component is defined as having a single function. Maritime components are grouped according to their functionality to compare the energy efficiency of components which can solve the same task onboard a vessel. The standard is limited to components for which a “unit output” can be clearly defined and which require energy to function. The standard only covers energy consuming components. This standard deals with five types of components:
- Pressure components
- Flow components
- Lighting
- Heating/Cooling components
- Mechanical components.
The energy efficiency is evaluated using a specified set of global ambient conditions. The energy efficiency is also evaluated using ambient conditions for operation in arctic, tempered or tropical regions.

1.3 ISO/AWI 8933-2: Ships and marine technology — Energy efficiency — Part 2: Energy efficiency of maritime functional units
Approved new Work Item (AWI): This standard describes generic measuring and calculation methods to evaluate the energy efficiency of multiple components connected in a system called a functional unit. The system is further characterized by integrating multiple functions to achieve an overall goal. The purpose of this standard is to allow for the comparison of the energy efficiency of various functional units, thus ensuring that efficient design is rewarded. The standard is limited to functional units for which a “unit output” can be clearly defined and which require energy to function. The standard only covers energy consuming functional units. This standard deals with five types of functional units:
- Pressure functional units
- Flow functional units
- Lighting functional units
- Heating/Cooling functional units
- Mechanical functional units
The standard requires specific information about the individual components forming the functional unit, the ship and how the functional unit will be integrated on board. The energy efficiency is evaluated using a specified set of global ambient conditions. The energy efficiency is also evaluated using ambient conditions for operation in arctic, tempered or tropical regions.

3. Roadmap for Eco-Friendly Ship Standards
AD HOC GROUP (AHG): Group set up within a committee to look into a particular problem and report back to the parent committee at a meeting. The group is disbanded after the meeting at which it presents its report.

4. Strategic development plan for Ship Design
Scope of SC 8: “Standardization of design and construction for ships and maritime installations for definition of interfaces and creation of interchangeability as well as for determination of safety requirements and ship performance”
Specific points of Discussion under the Strategic Development Plan:
- Support the shipbuilding industry for the transformation to ships with reduced and in the long term zero CO2 emissions
- Consider CO2 emissions during the production process and recycling of shipbuilding parts, components and machinery (from cradle to grave)
